February 22nd

Goldfinch, winter, JCBright, February 22nd

Every year we set up several bird feeders, including one with nyger seed for the Goldfinches.  By late fall these finches are no longer gold, though the males still have a small epaulet of yellow.  What Clayton saw and painted here appears to be a female American Goldfinch, which, while never having the brilliance of the males, becomes even drabber in color in winter.  She is perched just above the nyger bird feeder just as the morning sunlight cants across the pergola where she is resting.  The background snow below remains in shadow, hence its bluish color.

This painting, February 22nd, is oil on linen on panel:  8 by 11 inches; $1450 framed.
