This pochade box is the result of an evolution in design. Some parts are my ideas entirely, while a few bits are modifications of ideas seen on other painters’ homemade boxes. The guiding factor has always been to create the most serviceable, light, weight pochade box possible. It is a lightweight box for those who paint outside and want to enjoy the convenience of a ‘close it and go’ paint box that will protect both the painting and the palette. Closed it measures 13 x 11 x 1 ¼ inches and weighs 2.5 pounds. Is constructed of furniture grade multi-layered birch plywood in Avondale, Pennsylvania.
The removable frame on the top half holds a sheet of primed canvas while the palette well on the bottom is protected with a sheet from a paper palette pad held in place by lightly spraying its back with an adjustable spray adhesive, available from any office supply store. The depth of the canvas frame, along with the depth of the palette well, prevents the canvas and extra paint from touching.
